Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) has never been more critical as organizations face increasing challenges from climate change, natural disasters, and evolving workplace risks. OSH refers to the policies, programs, and practices designed to protect the well-being of employees in the workplace — encompassing everything from preventing accidents and injuries to promoting physical and mental health on the job. It’s essential because a safe and healthy work environment not only safeguards employees from hazards but also enhances productivity, morale, and overall organizational resilience.
SM Retail’s Workplace Management Team participated in the 57th National Industrial Safety Conference, themed “Achieving Excellence in OSH Resiliency and Sustainability”. Organized by the Safety Organization of the Philippines, Inc. (SOPI), the event brought together OSH practitioners, industry leaders, and representatives from various organizations to exchange insights and best practices on building resiliency and advancing sustainability in OSH amid the growing challenges posed by climate change and natural calamities.

As the Philippines continues to experience increasing natural calamities and disasters, the conference emphasized the urgent need for organizations to strengthen hazard preparedness, integrate climate-related risks into OSH programs, and adopt proactive and adaptive measures to ensure business continuity. Emphasis was also placed on sustainability, encouraging companies to practice responsible resource management, environmental stewardship, and align workplace safety initiatives with sustainable practices.
The conference concluded with the awarding ceremony of the 2025 Industrial Safety Awards honoring companies for their outstanding commitment to workplace safety and continuous improvement. SM Retail has once again earned outstanding recognition for its unwavering commitment to occupational safety. Building on our success in the previous years, we raised the bar even higher in 2025 by securing an impressive 43 awards, reaffirming our leadership in workplace safety excellence. These honors were accepted by our Vice President for Workplace Management, Mr. Luis Lava Jr., and Facilities, Warehouse, and Supplies Division Head, Mr. Matthew Lu, together with our Workplace Management Team.

“These awards strongly affirm SM Store and SM Retail’s safety-first culture, highlighting the organization’s ability to sustain large-scale operations while consistently prioritizing employee well-being.
