Culture Champions Learning Session on Growth Mindset

Check out the happenings at the Culture Champions Learning Session on Growth Mindset. The SM Life Culture Champions program is now on its third year, and there’s still a lot to learn! The SM Life team organized a learning session attended by Culture Champions both onsite and online.

The SM Life Culture Champions program is now on its third year, and there’s still a lot to learn! The SM Life team organized a learning session attended by Culture Champions both onsite and online. It was an insightful three hours of non-stop learning, sharing, and delving deeper into the DELITE Values. The session focused on cultivating a growth mindset, deepening of the values, and mainstreaming them within our culture.

Professor Xavier Alpasa provided a quick recap of the journey of SM Life from 2022 to date, reviewed the descriptions of the nine Enneagram Personality Types, and discussed the differences between a growth mindset and a fixed mindset.

Reflecting on previous discussions, we recognized that the identity of the Culture Champions is that of “Witnesses first, Evangelizers next.” From this, a mission statement was formed: “I am a Culture Champion. I LIVE and ADVOCATE the DELITE Values” / “We are Culture Champions. We LIVE and ADVOCATE the DELITE Values.”

A panel discussion featured three of our SM Leaders: Mr. Kiko, Senior Vice President for ITS-SM Retail Inc; Mr. Ross, Vice President for SM Store; and Ms. Janice, Senior Vice President for Homeworld. They shared their experiences with the Culture Champions in their groups and discussed their requests, hopes, and challenges for the Culture Champions moving forward.

“Having Culture Champions like you stand in front of the group and help translate what the banner and screensaver say into what we actually do is extremely helpful. I’ve seen this in our townhalls, where our Culture Champions explain what these values mean and how we, as employees of the company, can live them. If these corporate values are only confined to the workplace, it feels incomplete. You have to live them and believe in them.

Let’s take up the challenge. As Culture Champions, let’s understand how these values affect us both as SM employees and as individuals. That’s the best way for you to truly live and advocate for these values.”

Mr. Kiko, Senior Vice President for ITS- SM Retail Inc.

“Our Culture Champions always need to take the driver’s seat. They are the ones we put front and center when important transactions need to be addressed.

As they say in school, culture is a way of life. Culture Champions want to help people understand and appreciate that it’s not just about attending a seminar. It’s about living the lessons we’ve learned from all the learning activities we’ve had. It’s not a one-time thing; you have to live it—not only at work, but especially at home.

When you have a growth mindset, you never stop thinking about how you can grow, whether it’s your business or yourself.”

Mr. Ross, Vice President for SM Store

“Because people see our Culture Champions truly driving it, the culture becomes more alive, and it’s easier to think, ‘I want to do this, and it’s possible.’ The example becomes more concrete than just something that’s said or taught.”

“In Homeworld, in Operations, we use OBCC, which stands for Observe, Bond, Connect, and Close. How can we see the DELITE values being executed in the company? We ask, “What values are we actually applying?” so that it’s quick and clear for them, and they automatically understand that these are the actions they can take.”

Ms. Janice, Senior Vice President of Homeworld

An exercise followed, where Culture Champions were asked to formulate an Individual Development Plan for their growth mapping. After that, a breakout group session allowed them to discuss how they envision deepening the DELITE Values in their respective organizations.

The session closed with a short video about the pencil’s tale and a surprise: each Culture Champion received a pencil with the mission statement written on it, serving as a reminder of the essence of the pencil.

As a Culture Champion myself, my key takeaway from the learning session was how our mindset influences our personal interactions and work. This mindset impacts how we think, feel, and behave. Like the pencil, we should embrace challenges for growth, learn from mistakes, value our inner qualities, and strive to leave a positive mark. This will help us become the best versions of ourselves as Culture Champions. I look forward to the next learning session!
