Earth Hour is a global movement that invites people, businesses, and communities to switch off non‑essential lights for one hour each year in March as a symbolic show of commitment to our planet. Beyond the act itself, it raises awareness about climate change, energy conservation, and the urgent need to protect our natural resources.
SM Retail joined the global movement by dedicating a full week to sustainability, featuring eco‑inspired activities that encouraged simple, conscious actions to help protect the Earth.
Activities throughout the week included Shoot That Bottle, where our employees were encouraged to drop off clean, used plastic bottles at designated bins. The collected materials were later turned over to our partner organization ENB Scrap Trading through its Trash to Cash program. Employees also took part in a lantern‑making workshop, designing their own lanterns using recycled materials, as well as a gardening session that introduced the basics of planting.

To deepen awareness, employees were also given the opportunity to watch the documentary Our Planet, which highlighted urgent environmental threats such as climate change, habitat loss, and human activity. An eco‑yoga session further complemented the line up of activities, guiding employees through a calm, mindful exercise that promoted both personal well‑being and environmental sustainability.

To cap off the celebration, employees across the country took part in the global Earth Hour movement on March 28 by either switching or dimming off non-essential lights.
Across different roles, locations, and routines, our employees made Earth Hour their own. For many, it came at the end of a full day after hours on the sales floor, in stockrooms, or at the office. Some spent the hour with loved ones or took a quiet moment to rest and reflect.
In retail, where operations run continuously and energy use is part of daily work, moments like this stand out. Choosing to switch off or dim off, no matter how brief, creates space to reflect on how we use resources and how small changes can make a big difference.

While Earth Hour lasts for one hour, its message goes beyond it. Turning off unused lights. Using only what is needed. Reducing everyday energy waste. These simple practices, when done consistently and across thousands of employees, create meaningful impact over time.
What made our participation notable was not the scale of individual actions, but our collective effort as one organization. It reflects how our teams work every day — practical, collaborative, and focused on doing things better, step by step.
At SM Retail, we believe that sustainability is a shared commitment, shaped together, one thoughtful choice at a time.
