Sleep Matters: A Conversation on Wellness and Balance at SM Retail

We turned our focus to something we often take for granted, but is vital for healing and recovery: sleep.

In recent years, companies and organizations have increasingly emphasized mental health to raise awareness and support employee well-being.

We turned our focus to something we often take for granted, but is vital for healing and recovery: sleep. SM Retail employees, both onsite and online, came together to explore the powerful link between mental health and sleep wellness, guided by our esteemed guest speaker, Dr. Irene Carmelle S. Tan, a respected psychiatrist and educator.

Dr. Tan shared the fundamentals of sleep, common causes of sleep difficulties — from stress and irregular routines to mental health conditions and lifestyle habits, and offered practical strategies for improving sleep through good sleep hygiene and, when necessary, professional care. It was a session that reminded us all of the importance of rest in maintaining overall well-being.

Our employees were fully engaged in the discussion, raising insightful questions about evening sleep patterns, the impact of COVID-19 on rest, sleep medications, and more. Their enthusiastic participation validated a collective understanding that sleep is crucial for mental health. This conversation is one we all need — sleep is a free, yet powerful tool that helps us maintain balance in both our work and personal lives.

As Dr. Tan reminded us, and in alignment with our DELITE Values, prioritizing sleep goes beyond simply getting rest. It’s about showing up as our best selves, both at work and at home. After all, as sleep experts affirm, ‘sleep is the single most effective way to reset our brain and body health each day’.

At SM Retail, we believe that true success begins with well-being. By championing health and wellness initiatives, from mental health awareness to sleep education, we create an environment where every employee can thrive and bring their best self to both work and life.

Tips for a Better Night’s Sleep

Quality rest fuels better focus, productivity, and overall well-being. Here are simple habits you can practice to improve your sleep:

  • Wake up at the same time every day, even on weekends.
  • Get natural daylight exposure to support healthy sleep rhythms.
  • Get a good workout during the day to promote deeper sleep at night.
  • Avoid daytime naps, especially late in the afternoon.
  • Limit or avoid caffeine, particularly in the afternoon and evening.
  • Avoid cigarette smoking, which can disrupt sleep quality.
  • Make sleep a priority by giving yourself enough hours to rest.
  • Keep a regular sleep schedule to help regulate your body clock.
  • Set a wind-down routine to signal your body that it’s time to sleep.
  • Avoid alcohol close to bedtime.
  • Reserve your bed only for sleep to strengthen your mind’s sleep association.
  • Avoid using electronics before bedtime to reduce exposure to blue light.
  • If you’re not sleepy, get out of bed and do a quiet activity until you feel drowsy.
